The Vault of Horror (1973)

Starring: Terry-Thomas (Robin Hood), Tom Baker (Doctor Who), Daniel Massey (Star!), Glynis Johns (Mary Poppins), Anna Massey (The Importance of Being Earnest)

First Impressions Before Seeing The Film
This is going to be short because honestly never heard of this film. It was a pound and cheap but I love the cheesy horror films back in the day to see what we have today. So, to extend this makes me laugh when people say "oh that horror is bad". Watch past ones, then you can say it. Some people forget, special effects 50 years ago are very very different from what we are working with today.

After I watched the film
Well, I have to remember this was made in 1973 so whilst watching this film I understand it's not going to be like Saw! Personally, I don't like it reminded me of so much horror stories and just mashed it into this film. There wasn't really a good or bad form of acting it was just plain which is what the 70s loved the similar looks people do and the "ahh" before the axe hits you kinda acting. But, I give it a 1 simply because I don't like this horror. I LOVE LOVE horror films from the 80s there's a reason for that I mean Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, Halloween do some history these films came out quite close together. There's reasons for that. But, this. I just don't like it. It got boring, silly, cheesy (not the good kind was suppose to be a full on horror).

(SPOILERS)
From an IMDB user named planktonrules said this "The first, third and fourth segments were all completely forgettable and so I won't bother elaborating on them. They just weren't very interesting or scary. The second one, starring Terry-Thomas, wasn't exactly brilliant, but was pretty enjoyable and the final scene, though a tad cheesy, made me really laugh--so it was worthwhile. The only one of the five that really worked well was the final segment that starred Tom Baker (you know, the Dr. Who that everyone liked so much in the 1970s). Baker played an angry artist who wanted revenge on three men who had cheated him and the way this played out was indeed clever. Because of this and the concluding scene, at least the movie ended on a positive note. However, due to the film's highly uneven nature, I'd not recommend it. It's not so much bad--it's just not very good either. Apparently, I am in the minority, though, as several other reviewers liked it." I agree with him, I just felt that it was sooo much that you forget some bits of the film. Then, that makes me think why make a film like that if your just gonna forget about the major segments.

Did Tom Baker play a different character to his Doctor Who acting?
Funny enough he did, the past user mentioned that in the 1970s he plays the iconic Doctor in Doctor Who. So, watching this film and compare it to his television saga for many many years I would have to say that the acting was interesting to see as a horror fanatic.
So, what's the bottom line?
It's a good film, I mean lots of users and reviews say it's a classic. I just don't like this type of film with mass of horror stereotypes, monsters etc I like it simple with one villain and knowing there background in detail.
Tips if watching the film?
Simple, go in with an open mind and remember the effects is the 70s

My rankings
Since I didn't like it but I know some horror fans will like it I gave it a 1 out of 10 IMDB gave it a 6.6. I only gave it a 1 because of Tom Baker's performance I take that but for a film I can't give him more simply because it's not a great film. Great acting by Tom Baker but that's it in my opinion.
